Blog Portfolio Essay Assignment
Some of the writing skills I have mastered are how to write leads, direct and indirect quotes, and datelines. In the Hodge Fire assignment, I received a score of 100/100. I wrote an immediate identification lead and a delayed lead.
One of the wiring assignments I had difficulty in was the Interview assignment. I got a 60/100, which was the lowest score I received on an assignment. I committed 8 GSP mistakes and repeatedly referred to my interviewee by her first name and not her last name.
A writing skill I must improve on is to inform the reader on the location and time. I repeated this mistake throughout the assignment, Writing Assignment 2: Inverted Pyramid. I needed to read the article from the readers’ perspective and not assume they would know where the city I mentioned was located.
Before taking this class, I did not know the inverted pyramid style of writing. I learned information hierarchy, and how to identify the most important to least vital information. I also learned how to write leads that capture the readers’ attention and summarize the story.
I will continue practicing and improving my writing skills by using my AP stylebook to write any future print, digital, interview, press release work. I will also read news articles from a more informed perspective and learn how they are written to later apply it to my writing.
The writing style I enjoyed the most was public relations. As a public relations major, I found it interesting to learn something that I will be doing in the future.
The writing style I found most difficult to learn was interview. I really enjoyed interviewing my classmate and she had an interesting story. When writing the interview, I failed to capture the verbal interview into words.
I learned AP style through class lectures. The AP Style book was especially useful and was where I looked up most of my information. A technique I used to become proficient in AP style was to compare my leads and quotes to past examples given by the professor.
By self-reflecting, I can determine what my writing weaknesses and strengths are. Reading over my past writing and feedback makes it so I can fix and not repeat mistakes. A technique that was useful in assuring that I was not missing valuable information in my article was to read the story aloud and pretend that I do not know any background information.
